EVENTS (check the calendar for details)
Annual Membership Meeting
Every year in the spring (May or June), the Senior Caucus holds an all-member meeting either in person or using remote access, or it is a hybrid of both.
The meeting was held on Wednesday June 28, 2023.
2023 Annual Meeting Documents:
The following documents were used at the meeting:
Our speaker was William J. Middlecamp, speaking on Climate Realities and Solutions. Bill is a trained climate reality leader & EnROADS Ambassador, and he gave a fascinating presentation.
Seniors have a positive impact on the political and legislative process, and we work to continue the impressive blue wave movement all across our state in election years.
Day on the Hill
MN Capitol Hill, that is!
Every year near the beginning of the Legislative session (February or March), the Senior Caucus asks legislators and issues leaders to talk to our members at a venue in or near the Capitol. Also, some members take the opportunity to visit with their local legislators at their Capitol office. This is a great event for all of us, experienced or novices, to hear about issues and speak directly to our elected officials.
On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, DFL seniors gathered in the beautiful conference room on the third floor of the MN Capitol building to meet with various legislators or their representatives. We had a very good turnout in the face of a pending snowstorm, when the Legislature was cramming many meetings on that day to adjourn early and allow everyone to ride out the storm at home.
Kay Hendrikson, Senior Caucus Chair, presided and welcomed guests as they arrived. The events committee (Don Slaten, Sandy Sandoval, MaryAnn Vandevusse, Mary Bliesmer) provided coffee and donuts and fruit for all participants. The agenda was fluid as committee meetings were scheduled, but we had a steady stream of legislators who were gracious in presenting their bills and other activities to us, including House Speaker Melissa Hortman.
Two special presenters were Geri Katz, Manager of Practice, Education, & Special Projects for MN Nurses Association Universal Health Care and Sheri Pugh, Council Member City of Mound, Age Friendly MN.
Many thanks to all who attended and to all the legislators who were able to meet with us. It was an interesting and worthwhile day for everyone involved.
Senior Caucus members meet on Zoom once a month for a lively discussion of a politically or socially oriented book and the issues raised. Check the flyer for the current book title and Zoom link, or check our historical list to get caught up on titles you missed.
Summer Social and Fall Gala
Get to know other like-minded seniors at our annual social events–picnic and gala. Besides social time, both events feature elected officials, candidates for office, and other political leaders, depending on the election cycle.
The picnic is held at a park pavilion in late summer. The Senior Caucus provides burgers and “dogs” and fixin’s, and everyone is asked to bring a potluck dish to share. Note: The summer gathering was not held in 2023 due to unpredictable wildfire smoke from Canada.
The gala is held at a catered venue in late fall for a minimal charge. The Senior Caucus provides the program, including entertainment. Click here for the flyer and registration link for the October 29, 2023, gala.
Senior Caucus interviewed US Representative Dean Phillips, CD3, in August 2020. View the interview here.
Senator Al Franken was the keynote speaker at our annual meeting on Saturday, September 11, 2021, sharing his in-depth knowledge of issues and strategy and reminding us of his special sense of humor. Watch the video here.
